Associate Dean Ana Isabel García Reyes
Associated Dean Ana Garcia Reyes started her career as a counselor at Aspira of New York, Inc. She served as Director of the Student Support Services / TRIO Program at the City College of the City University of New York. Under her management, the program provided key services to its participants, resulting in a significantly improved retention rate among the population it served from 1991 to 1996. During her tenure, significant expansion plans were implemented in space, personnel and budget increase. Students’ enrollment, retention and graduation also increased significantly.
Dean García Reyes has been affiliated with Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College since March 1996. She started as the Special Assistant to the President /Chief of Staff. In March 1998, she assumed additional duties and responsibilities under the title of Special Assistant to the President for Community as well as Director of Study Abroad/ Professional Development Programs. As Director and Coordinator of the Professional Development Program and Study Abroad Program, she designs the curriculum for teachers, professionals and other educators in collaboration with NYC DOE administrators, Cultural Centers and Universities in the Dominican Republic and New York City.
Dean García Reyes has over 35 years of experience in student and community affairs, including extensive work in program management and special programs. Over the years Dean García-Reyes has been successful in her efforts of fundraising and development efforts. In addition, she has many years of experience in evaluating and training personnel. She has established procedures for the development and sustainability of grant-funded projects. She coordinates the college’s heritage month celebrations including; Dominican Heritage, Hispanic Heritage, Black Heritage. She also coordinates conferences, seminars and forums. She also serves on the college’s Middle States Accreditation Committee; the college’s Senior Leadership Council / Senior Management group; the college’s Institutional Development Committee; and SLC subcommittee on community engagement among others.
As the community relations liaison for the college and a member of the CUNY External Relations Council (formerly CUNY Legislative Action Council (CLAC), Dean García Reyes maintains professional ties with external institutions, policy makers and professional organizations at city, state, and federal levels. The New York City Council recommended her unanimously to the New York City Youth Board in 1993 and from 1994 to the present received 5 Mayoral reappointments to this body as a Board Member.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York; the Latino Jewish Coalition
The Nasry Michelen Foundation and the CUNY International Educators Council. In addition, she is a founding and advisory board member of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute; Founding Member and Vice Chair of the Dominican Studies Association as well as Founding Member of CUNY in the Heights.
She is also the founder of the NYS Dominican Woman in Government organization. From September 2001-September 2002, García Reyes served as President of the Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR), the first Dominican American organization in the United States. She has participated in many conferences and roundtable discussions. Dean Garcia Reyes is also a founding member of the first Professional Development / Teacher Training Program between the Dominican Republic and the New York State Department of Education, established in 2001. Dean Garcia Reyes is an expert in the field of academic, cultural exchanges and professional development training for teachers. She has long lasting experience working with institutions of higher learning in the Dominican Republic and the United States. She has received numerous national and international awards for her life time achievement of service to the community and coordination of academic and cultural exchanges for over 3 decades.
Ms. García Reyes received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1987 and Master of Science degree in Bilingual Education from the City College of the City University of New York (CUNY) in 1989. She has been involved in public service for close to 4 decades. She has received numerous certificates of accreditation in different fields including: Certificate of Counseling from HRA- Department of Employment and Staff Development; Certificate of Student Retention from Inter-American University in Puerto Rico and Certificates of Professional Development Seminars from the City University of New.
Ms. García-Reyes has published articles and books and has featured on numerous media outlets including; channels 41-Univision; 47-Telemundo; News 1; News 12; 75-CUNY TV (Study with the Best series); Dominican Republic News; Bronx Net and Spanish Manhattan and Bronx TV cable programs, among others.
Ms. García Reyes has received numerous awards and citations from the New York City Council, New York City and State Comptrollers, the New York State Assembly, the New York State Senate, the State of Rhode Island and Providence House of Representatives, and the United States House of Representatives. She has also been recognized by numerous higher learning institutions, and professional organizations for her leadership and advocacy on behalf of underserved communities.
For two consecutive years, Ms. García Reyes received the highest educational award conferred to educators by the Minister of Education and the Presidency of the Dominican Republic. In 2004 and 2005, she received “The Salomé Ureña de Henríquez” Award. This honor is bestowed on educators with a record of lifelong commitment to excellence in education. This award is presented at the National Palace in the Dominican Republic by the President of the Dominican Republic. The most recent awards include: Association of Progressive women; NYC and State Citation and Proclamation from elected and appointed officials in 2019. Others include woman of the year award from the Association of Progressive Women; The most 25 influential women of the Bronx Life Time Achievement Award by the Hispanic Health Professionals Association of NY (AHPSI); New York State Governor’s Hispanic Heritage Award, among others. She enjoys mentoring students, and engaging in community service.

She is the youngest daughter of a Puerto Rican woman, named Ana Luisa Ramirez de Garcia and a Dominican Cibaeño, named José Marcelino García. She has a daughter named Natil Linette Reyes, three sisters, one brother and many nieces and nephews.
